Why an exposed chain wears out

A bicycle chain wears at the pins and the inside of the rollers, where metal slides against metal every time a link bends around a sprocket. Lubricant separates those surfaces, and grit that reaches them turns the lubricant into a grinding paste that accelerates the process considerably. Wet roads throw a continuous spray of water and fine road grit directly onto an unprotected chain, which is why winter mileage wears drivetrains faster.

The result is a chain that lengthens as clearances open up, which then wears the sprockets into a matching shape and eventually starts skipping. Cleaning helps because it removes the abrasive, which is why the cleaning matters more than the choice of lubricant applied afterwards.

What a full chain case actually does

A full case encloses the chain, both sprockets and the return run in a sealed housing that grit and spray cannot easily enter. Because the abrasive never arrives, the lubricant inside stays useful for a long time and the wear rate falls sharply.

It also stops the chain from marking your trousers, which removes one of the small daily frictions that stops people cycling in ordinary clothes. The case is only fully effective when it is genuinely closed, and a partial guard covering the top run leaves the underside exposed to spray. The trade is weight, a rattly component if it is mounted badly, and access that turns a simple chain check into a small dismantling job.

Belt drive and what it removes

A toothed belt replaces the chain with a reinforced polymer loop running on matched pulleys, and it does not need lubricant at all. Nothing on the system holds oil, so nothing collects grit into a paste, and cleaning is a matter of rinsing it rather than degreasing anything. Belts are quiet, they do not mark clothing, and they typically last considerably longer than a chain in the same conditions.

They cannot be shortened, joined or repaired at the roadside, so a failure ends the ride rather than delaying it. Because the belt is a continuous loop, the frame must have a joint or split in the rear triangle to allow it to be fitted at all.

Why belts need a different drivetrain

A belt will not tolerate being pushed sideways between sprockets, so it cannot work with a derailleur system in any practical form. That means a belt bike almost always uses a hub gear, a gearbox or a single fixed ratio to manage gearing internally. Hub gears bring their own advantages here, since they are sealed, shift while stationary and pair naturally with an enclosed transmission.

In the saddle, the combination produces a machine that will run through a wet winter with very little attention, which is the entire point.

It also produces a machine where a specialist repair is more likely to be needed and fewer shops will have the parts on the shelf.

Tension, alignment and the failure modes

Belts require correct tension and accurate alignment between the two pulleys, and both are less forgiving than a chain would be. Too little tension lets the belt skip a tooth under load, which is startling and can be felt as a sudden lurch at the pedals. Too much tension loads bearings continuously and shortens the life of the hub and bottom bracket for no gain.

The bit that actually matters: misalignment causes the belt to track towards one edge of the pulley, where it rubs and eventually damages the reinforcing fibres. None of this is difficult, but it is specific, and getting it set correctly once by someone who has done it before saves a lot of experimentation.

Which one suits which rider

If you ride mostly in the dry and enjoy working on the machine, an exposed chain is cheap, universally repairable and entirely fine. If you ride in ordinary clothes through a wet winter and want to think about the drivetrain as rarely as possible, a full case earns its weight quickly. If you want the lowest routine attention of all and can accept specialist repair, a belt with an internal gear system delivers that.

In the saddle, cost rises across that list, and so does the difficulty of finding someone to fix it in an unfamiliar town. The honest comparison is not which is best but how much of your maintenance appetite you want to spend on the transmission.
