Frame Size Decides Less Than You Have Been Told

Size gets treated as the master variable in buying a bike. It sets a couple of dimensions and leaves most of the fit to the parts bolted on.

What the frame actually fixes

Two frame measurements genuinely constrain you: the horizontal distance from saddle to handlebar, and the height of the top tube where you straddle it. Everything else that determines your riding position is set by the saddle, the seatpost, the stem and the handlebar, all of which can be changed. That is why a frame slightly too large is a harder problem than one slightly too small, since you can raise a seatpost but not shorten a top tube.

Standover clearance matters most on a bike you stop and start constantly, because you put a foot down at every junction on a commute. A frame that clears your body when you stand over it and lets you sit comfortably with a small bend at the elbow has done its job.

Why the labels do not match

Manufacturers variously size frames in centimetres of seat tube, in inches, or as small, medium and large, and none of those systems agree with each other. Sloping top tubes made seat tube length close to meaningless as a comparison, because two frames of the same stated size can have very different reaches.

The measurements that transfer between bikes are stack and reach, the vertical and horizontal distances from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube. If you already have a bike that fits, recording its stack and reach gives you a shopping tool that works across brands. A shop that can quote those two numbers for a frame is being more useful to you than one that only quotes a letter.

The height chart problem

Charts that map your height to a frame size are averages, and human proportions vary enough that two riders of identical height can need different frames. Leg length relative to torso is the main variable, and it decides whether your saddle ends up high with a short reach or the reverse.

Arm length changes the picture again, which is why some riders are comfortable on a frame the chart says is a size too big. Use the chart to narrow the choice to two adjacent sizes and then ride both, because that comparison answers the question the chart cannot. If both feel plausible, the smaller frame gives you more adjustment room and is the safer purchase for a first bike.

What adjustment can and cannot rescue

Saddle height, saddle fore-aft position, handlebar height and stem length are all changeable, and between them they cover a surprisingly wide range of positions. Stem length in particular can shift your reach substantially, though very short or very long stems change how the steering responds.

What adjustment cannot fix is a frame you cannot stand over safely, or one whose reach is so long that no sensible stem brings the bars close enough. Riders often try to fix a too-long frame with a very short stem and end up with twitchy handling they blame on the bike's geometry. The honest test is whether the shop is reaching for extreme parts to make the fit work, which usually means the frame is the wrong one.

Sizing for the riding you will actually do

A bike used upright in traffic wants a shorter reach and higher bars than the same rider would choose for long weekend distances. Upright positions put more weight on the saddle and less on the hands, which suits stop-start riding and lets you look further around you.

Lower positions cut wind drag, which matters once you are moving quickly enough for air resistance to dominate the effort. Most commuters spend their time well below that speed, so the aerodynamic argument for a stretched position is weaker than the visibility argument against it. Buy for the position you want after twenty minutes in traffic rather than the one that feels sporty in a car park.

Testing a size properly

A five-minute ride round a block tells you about the gears and the brakes and almost nothing about whether the frame fits. Fit problems show up as numbness, neck ache or a constant urge to shuffle on the saddle, and those take twenty minutes or more to appear.

Come the wet months, ask whether the shop will swap a stem or saddle after purchase, because a good one expects to and a poor one treats it as a complaint. If you are buying second hand, borrow the seller's allen keys and set the saddle to your usual height before riding it. Judge the bike from a position you would actually use, not from whatever the previous owner left it at.
