Riding Rough Pavement Without Fighting the Bike

Broken asphalt punishes riders who stay rigid, because a stiff body forces the frame to absorb impacts that limbs handle far better.

Most American city riding happens on pavement that has been patched, cut, and frozen repeatedly. How a rider handles that surface changes comfort and control more than any component does.

The bike has almost no suspension travel

A rigid bicycle absorbs impact through tire deflection and a small amount of frame and fork flex, together amounting to a very short travel distance.

Everything beyond that has to be absorbed somewhere, and the only remaining path is through the contact points into the rider's hands, seat, and feet.

A rider who is locked out straight at the elbows and sitting heavily is choosing the harshest available path for that energy.

Limbs are the suspension that already exists

Bent elbows and unlocked knees allow the body to stay at a roughly constant height while the bike moves underneath it.

The habit matters most at road edges and utility cuts, which are the features most likely to pinch a tube or deflect a front wheel.

Grip depends on the wheel staying in contact

A wheel bouncing off the surface produces no braking or steering force during the airborne fraction of each bounce.

Tires with more air volume run at lower pressure conform to irregularities instead of skipping over them, which keeps contact time higher on the same surface.

That is why the practical benefit of wider tires on broken pavement shows up in control as much as in comfort.

Line choice does more than technique

The smoothest strip on a deteriorated street is often not at the curb, where debris collects and where drainage cuts and utility covers cluster.

Reading the surface far enough ahead to move laterally in a straight line is more effective than swerving late, and it is also more predictable to drivers behind.

Choosing a line early, signaling the shift when it involves other traffic, and holding it steadily gives both grip and clarity at the same time.
