Saddle Shape Is a Sit Bone Problem
Comfort on a bike depends on whether the saddle supports the pelvis where it is designed to bear weight, which is a question of width and shape rather than padding.

Riders with an uncomfortable saddle usually look for a softer one. The variable that actually determines comfort is where the weight is being carried.
The pelvis has two points built to take load
At the base of the pelvis are two bony prominences that carry weight when sitting. They are the structures a saddle is meant to support.
The distance between them varies considerably between individuals and does not track height or build closely. This is why saddles come in different widths.
If the saddle is too narrow, those points sit off its edges and the load moves onto soft tissue. If too wide, it interferes with the legs.
Padding can make the problem worse
A soft saddle allows the bony points to sink through the padding until they reach firmer material underneath. The compressed padding then presses upward on everything between them.
This is why heavily padded saddles often feel good for short rides and poor for longer ones. The failure mode takes time to develop.
A firmer saddle of the correct width usually distributes load better. Comfort here comes from geometry rather than cushioning.
Riding position changes which part of the saddle is used
An upright rider sits directly on the widest part of the saddle. A rider leaning forward rotates the pelvis, moving contact toward the narrower nose.
A saddle suited to one position is often wrong for the other. This is why a saddle transferred between two bikes can feel completely different.
Handlebar height therefore has to be settled before saddle choice. Changing it afterwards moves the contact area and invalidates the fit.
Cutouts and channels address a specific issue
A relieved centre section reduces pressure on the soft tissue between the sit bones. For riders who experience numbness, this is the relevant feature.
It is not universally beneficial. For some riders the edges of a cutout create new pressure points, and a solid saddle of the right width is more comfortable.
The presence of a channel says nothing about width, which remains the primary variable. A wrongly sized saddle with a cutout is still wrongly sized.
Fitting a saddle takes rides, not minutes
A new saddle needs several rides at realistic distances before a judgement is possible. Tilt and fore-aft position both need adjusting during that period.
Small changes in tilt have large effects. A nose angled slightly down shifts weight onto the hands, and slightly up concentrates pressure at the front.
Riders who change saddles repeatedly without adjusting position are usually solving the wrong variable. The saddle that works is often one already owned, set differently.
