Larger wheels roll over obstacles more easily and smaller ones accelerate and fit better, and the differences are smaller than the marketing around wheel sizes implies.

Bikes are sold with wheels in several standard sizes, and riders are told each one is transformative. The real differences are specific and narrower than the claims.
Rolling over an obstacle is a geometry problem
When a wheel meets a step, the angle at which it contacts the edge determines how much of the impact pushes it upward rather than backward.
A larger wheel meets the same obstacle at a shallower angle. More of the impact becomes vertical motion and less becomes a deceleration the rider has to overcome.
This is why large wheels feel smoother on broken surfaces. The effect is real, and it is modest compared with the difference a wider tyre makes on the same road.
Small wheels accelerate more readily
A wheel's resistance to changing speed depends on how far its mass sits from the centre. Smaller wheels concentrate that mass closer in.
