Heat and Humidity Beat the Slow-Riding Trick

Riding gently keeps you cool in dry warmth and does almost nothing in humid air. The reason is that sweat only helps when it can evaporate.

Why sweating is not the cooling

The body sheds heat by producing sweat and then losing energy as that sweat changes from liquid to vapour on the skin. Sweat that runs off you without evaporating has cost you fluid and delivered almost no cooling in return.

How readily it evaporates depends on how much water the surrounding air is already carrying and how fast that air is moving. In dry air the process is efficient, which is why a hot dry day can feel manageable at a surprisingly high temperature. In humid air the same skin, the same sweat and the same effort produce far less cooling, which is the whole of the problem.

The trick that works and the day it stops working

Riding gently produces less internal heat, so in dry conditions slowing down genuinely keeps you close to comfortable. In humid air, slowing down also reduces the airflow across your skin, which is the other half of what makes evaporation work.

Come the wet months, the two effects partly cancel, and riders find that the slow-riding strategy that served them all spring suddenly fails in August. That is not a fitness problem or a technique problem, it is a straightforward consequence of the air being nearly saturated. Accepting that the humid days simply cannot be ridden into work sweat-free is more useful than trying harder to manage them.

Airflow is the variable you control

A rider moving through still air generates their own breeze, which is why cycling in heat is often more tolerable than walking in it. Anything that blocks that airflow removes the benefit, and a backpack against your back is the most common offender.

Moving the load onto a rack leaves your back exposed to moving air and makes an immediate difference on a hot day. Loose, light-coloured clothing lets air pass across the skin instead of trapping a warm humid layer against it. Waiting at a red light in direct sun with no airflow is where most of the overheating on a commute actually happens.

Route and timing choices that help

Shaded streets are meaningfully cooler than exposed ones, because direct sun adds radiant heat on top of the air temperature. A route along water or through a park is often several degrees cooler than the parallel main road, particularly late in the day.

Cities hold heat in their surfaces and release it slowly, so the evening ride home can be hotter than the morning one. Shifting a commute earlier is the single most effective change available in a hot climate, and it costs nothing.

Long climbs are worth reordering out of the hottest part of the day, since low speed and high effort combine badly.

Fluid, and the honest limits of advice

Sweat loss varies enormously between people, conditions and efforts, so any universal figure for how much to drink is not credible. Carrying water and drinking when thirsty covers most ordinary commuting in most conditions.

In the saddle, very long or very hot rides involve losses of salts as well as water, which is why some riders use drinks containing them. Heat illness is a genuine medical situation with recognised warning signs, and it is not something to manage by pushing on. If you feel unwell in the heat, stop, get out of the sun, and seek medical help rather than trying to finish the ride.

Road law for cycles and e-scooters is local, and enforcement is more local still.

Arriving in a state you can work in

A short cool-down before going inside lets sweating subside, which prevents the delayed soaking that happens after you change too early. Air conditioning immediately after a hot ride feels wonderful and often leaves you damp for the next twenty minutes anyway. A spare shirt, a towel and a few minutes are a better plan than trying to ride in a way that avoids sweating altogether.

Sunscreen matters on exposed arms and the back of the neck, and it is the item most commuters never think to keep at work. In genuinely extreme heat, riding is a decision rather than a default, and taking transport for a week is not a failure of commitment.
