Multi-Stop Days Are Where a Bike Beats a Car

Over one long journey a car wins easily. Over five short ones with parking in between, the arithmetic reverses and keeps reversing.

Where it falls apart

Anything genuinely bulky or heavy ends the argument immediately, and no amount of clever loading fixes a wardrobe. Long gaps between stops in a spread-out area remove the density advantage that made the bicycle competitive.

Carrying passengers, other than on a machine designed for it, is a limitation rather than an inconvenience. Severe weather changes the calculation, though rather less often than people expect once they have suitable clothing. Recognising which days are bicycle days and which are not is more useful than committing to either mode absolutely.

The habit that develops

Riders who do errands by bike gradually reorganise their week into more frequent, smaller trips because the cost of a stop is so low. That produces a pattern of movement that looks inefficient on paper and is comfortably faster in practice.

The change happens slowly and is usually noticed only when someone tries to go back and finds the car version tedious.
