Combining a car with a bike for the final stretch avoids the slowest, most expensive part of a drive, and it works only where the transfer point is properly chosen.

Where it is possible, this is the version people sustain. Loading a bike twice a day is the step that most often ends the habit after a few weeks.
Costs and constraints shift rather than disappear
The saving comes from cheaper parking and less time in congestion, offset by the equipment and the extra handling. For short city legs the margin can be small.
It is largest where central parking is expensive or restricted and where the outer road network flows freely. Those two conditions describe a lot of larger cities.
It also provides a fallback the pure car commute lacks. When the inner roads stop moving entirely, the bike leg is unaffected.
