Where the Time Goes Before You Leave the House

The riding portion of a bike commute is usually the predictable part, while the minutes spent preparing, loading and locking are what make the total journey time vary.

People planning a bike commute estimate the riding time and then find the journey takes longer. The difference sits almost entirely at either end of the ride.

Riding time is the stable component

Once a route is familiar, its duration varies little. Traffic affects a bike far less than a car, because a rider is not held in the same queues for the same duration.

This is one of the strongest arguments for the bike as transport. Arrival time can be predicted closely, which matters more than average speed for anyone with a fixed start time.

The predictability is undermined by everything surrounding the ride. Those parts vary by several minutes on a bad morning and are rarely accounted for.

Preparation expands to fill the uncertainty

Deciding what to wear takes time proportional to how uncertain the weather is. A forecast that could go either way costs more minutes than a clearly wet one.

Packing follows the same pattern. A bag assembled fresh each morning takes far longer than one prepared the previous evening, and it is more likely to be missing something.

The remedy is unglamorous. Deciding the night before removes the deliberation rather than speeding it up, which is a larger saving than riding faster could produce.

Getting the bike out is a fixed tax

Where a bike is stored determines a cost paid twice a day. A bike behind other bikes, up stairs, or under a cover takes minutes to extract and return.

That cost is invisible in journey planning and decisive in whether the commute survives. Access difficulty is one of the most common reasons a bike stops being ridden.

Improving it is usually cheap. Moving storage nearer the door does more for a commute than most equipment purchases.

Locking and unlocking at the far end

Securing a bike properly takes longer than people estimate, particularly where the stand is full or awkwardly placed. Finding a space can take as long as using it.

Removing lights, a computer and anything else detachable adds to that. Each item is a few seconds and the habit of removing them is what makes them add up.

Riders who reduce the number of detachable items reduce this reliably. Fewer things to take off is a more effective strategy than doing it faster.

The arrival routine belongs in the estimate

Changing, storing wet clothing and settling takes time that is part of the journey even if it happens indoors. Ignoring it produces an estimate that is consistently short.

Building it into the planned time removes the pressure to ride harder to compensate. Riding faster saves fewer minutes than arriving with the routine already accounted for.
