Irregular networks concentrate traffic onto a small number of routes, because those are the only continuous lines across the city. Those routes are often narrow, since they predate motor traffic, which leaves no room for separated provision.

Mid-traffic, between them the streets wander, connect unpredictably and frequently do not go through at all. That makes a quiet parallel route hard to find and sometimes genuinely nonexistent for a given journey. Post-war suburbs frequently use loops and cul-de-sacs, which produce very quiet residential streets with almost no through traffic. Those streets are pleasant to ride and connect to almost nothing, forcing every journey out onto a distributor road.

Come the wet months, a short path linking two cul-de-sacs can therefore replace a long detour, which is why such links matter far beyond their length. Cities that have retrofitted these connections have often seen local cycling rise without building anything resembling a cycle lane.

Where they are absent, the quiet streets are effectively a series of dead ends from a rider's point of view.

Terrain interacting with layout

Grid layouts ignore terrain, which is why some grid cities have streets running straight up gradients no rider wants. Organic layouts often follow contours, which produces winding but gentler routes between the same points.

With a loaded rack, that means the flattest route in an old city is frequently the historic one, which is also the busiest. Water and rail lines cut across both patterns, and the crossings become the pinch points that define the network. Reading a gradient map alongside a street map explains a great deal about why local riders take the routes they do.

Adapting how you ride to the pattern

In a grid, experiment freely, because getting it wrong costs a block and the next parallel street is right there. In an organic layout, ask someone, because the connections are not guessable and a wrong turn can cost a kilometre. In a suburb, look for paths and cut-throughs on satellite imagery, since they are the difference between a short ride and a long one.

The bit that actually matters: whichever pattern you are in, the crossings of rivers, railways and major roads are where the route is really decided. The layout is fixed and your knowledge of it is not, which is the only variable actually available to a rider.
