Rivers and Railways Make the Quietest Cycle Corridors

Many cities have usable cycle routes that were never planned as such. They follow rivers, canals and railway lines, and their value comes from a geometric accident.

Linear corridors have almost no junctions

Roads form a network, and networks intersect. A canal or a railway is a single line that other lines must cross above or below, because it cannot accommodate them at grade.

For a rider this removes the dominant source of both delay and conflict. Most of the risk and nearly all of the stopping on an urban ride happens at intersections.

The result is a route where average speed is close to riding speed. That is unusual in a city and explains why these corridors feel faster than their surface would suggest.

Gradients were solved by someone else first

Canals are close to level by construction, since water will not climb. Railways tolerate only shallow gradients because steel wheels lose traction on steep ones.

Both therefore cut through terrain that roads climb over. A hilly city often has one nearly flat line running through it, following a waterway or a rail alignment.

This matters more than it sounds for everyday riding. The flat route is the one people will still use in ordinary clothes on a bike carrying shopping.

The weaknesses are access and width

The same isolation that removes junctions also limits entry points. A corridor that can only be joined every kilometre is inconvenient for short trips even when it is ideal for long ones.

Towpaths in particular were built for horses and maintenance, not for two-way traffic. Their width is fixed by the structure beside them and cannot be increased.

Where such a path also carries walkers, the effective capacity is reached quickly. Conflict on a narrow towpath is a design consequence rather than a behaviour problem.

Surface and lighting decide seasonal usefulness

Unsealed paths drain badly and become unusable for a large part of the year. A corridor that works from spring to autumn does not do the job of a transport route.

Lighting is the other constraint, and it is often absent because the corridors sit away from streets. That removes them from use for the darker half of the day in winter.

Both are fixable, but both meet objections about the character of the setting. The trade-off between an amenity and a transport link is where most of these schemes stall.

They connect places that were never connected by road

Because they follow features rather than settlement, these corridors pass through areas roads route around. They often link districts whose road connection is indirect.

That produces journeys where the bike is genuinely faster than driving, not merely competitive. The road version of the same trip may involve a long detour to the nearest bridge or crossing.

Recognising which corridors do this is the useful piece of local knowledge. A city usually has one or two, and they carry a disproportionate share of its longer everyday riding.
