Stroads Are the Hardest Streets to Ride in America
The wide multi-lane commercial arterial tries to be a road and a street at once, and the compromise produces the conditions riders find most hostile.

The most difficult American street to ride is not the freeway or the narrow downtown block. It is the wide commercial arterial with turn lanes, strip malls, and a speed limit borrowed from a highway.
Two incompatible jobs in one cross-section
A road moves vehicles between places at speed. A street provides access to buildings along it, which requires slowing, turning, and stopping.
The arterial attempts both. It carries high volumes at high speeds while also serving dozens of driveways, parking lots, and businesses on either side.
The result is a design that satisfies neither purpose well, and the conflicts it generates fall hardest on the users with the least protection.

Higher speeds also lengthen stopping distances and narrow the effective field of view, so a driver scanning for a turning gap is less likely to register a rider approaching in the shoulder.
These effects compound rather than add, which is why traffic engineers treat operating speed as the primary variable on such corridors.
The alternatives usually do not connect
Riders are frequently advised to use parallel residential streets. On a grid that works, but arterials in suburban development often front subdivisions with no through connections.
The parallel street exists but ends in a cul-de-sac, so the arterial is the only continuous route between two points a mile apart.
That absence of an alternative is what makes the corridor unavoidable rather than merely unpleasant, and it is a land use outcome rather than a traffic one.
Retrofits work by changing the job the street does
Cities that improve these corridors generally do so by deciding which purpose wins. Access-oriented treatments add medians, consolidate driveways, and lower target speeds.
Movement-oriented treatments push the access function onto a parallel service road or a separated path set back from the travel lanes.
Both approaches work by removing the contradiction. Adding a painted shoulder while leaving the speeds and driveways unchanged leaves the underlying conflict exactly where it was.
