A Bike Coming Out of Storage Needs More Than Air

Months of standing still change tyres, cables, brake fluid and bearings in ways that are invisible, so the first ride after storage deserves a proper check rather than a pump.

A bike that has stood unused for months looks unchanged. Several things have altered while it sat, and the first ride is the wrong place to discover them.

Tyres deform and lose pressure unevenly

A tyre resting in one position for months develops a flat spot where it contacts the ground, particularly if it lost pressure while standing.

Most of this recovers after reinflation and a short ride. What does not recover is any cracking that developed in the sidewall while the tyre was deflated and flexed.

Inflating fully and inspecting the whole circumference before riding catches this. Rotating the wheel by hand is enough to see the full sidewall.

Cables corrode where they are hidden

Brake and gear cables run inside housing that traps whatever moisture was present when the bike was put away. Corrosion proceeds slowly and invisibly.

The symptom is a lever or shifter that moves and does not return properly. Friction has risen because the cable surface is no longer smooth.

This is felt immediately on the first ride, usually as gears that shift one way and not the other. It is a cable problem rather than an adjustment one.

Hydraulic systems change while standing

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and some formulations do so more readily than others. Absorbed water lowers the boiling point.

Seals also take a set when they have not moved. A lever that feels normal for the first few pulls and then changes is showing seals settling back in.

Pumping the levers several times before riding is worthwhile. A brake that does not firm up after that needs attention before the bike goes anywhere.

Grease migrates and stiffens

Grease in bearings separates slowly, with the oil component migrating away from the thickener. What remains at the contact surfaces may be a stiff residue.

Bearings feel notchy at first and often improve as the grease redistributes with use. Roughness that persists after a ride indicates actual wear rather than settling.

Turning every bearing by hand before riding gives a baseline. Headset, hubs and bottom bracket each take a few seconds to assess.

The first ride should be short and local

Whatever the inspection misses will appear once the bike is loaded and moving. A short circuit near home turns that into an inconvenience rather than a walk.

Braking hard once, deliberately, at low speed on a quiet street establishes that the brakes work under load rather than merely feeling firm.

Running through the full gear range does the same for shifting. Both take a minute and they find the problems that a stationary check cannot.

An indented headset bearing race, usually caused by riding with a loose headset. The notch cannot be polished out, so the bearing needs replacing, and the adjustment needs correcting afterwards.

How long should bearings last?

It depends far more on water and grit than on distance. A bike with mudguards and dry storage can go years; one ridden through salted winters without guards may need attention annually.
