A Bike Shop Diagnosis Starts With Describing the Noise

Mechanics identify faults from when a noise happens rather than what it sounds like, so the useful information is the conditions that reproduce it.

Most bike faults arrive as a noise, and most riders describe them in terms of the sound. Mechanics work from something else entirely: the conditions under which the noise appears.

Timing narrows the source faster than tone does

A noise that repeats once per wheel revolution points to something on the wheel or tire. One that repeats once per pedal revolution points to the drivetrain or the contact points.

A noise that appears only under load points to a joint being flexed, while one present when coasting points to something that turns without the cranks.

These distinctions eliminate entire regions of the bike before anything has been touched, which is why they are the first questions asked.

Load and position matter as much as timing

A creak that appears only when standing, only when seated, or only when pulling on one side of the bars tells the mechanic where the flex is occurring.

Noises that change with braking implicate the brake, the rotor, or the mounting, while noises that change with steering implicate the headset or a cable.

A noise that disappears entirely when the rider is off the bike means it needs load to reproduce, which changes the whole diagnostic approach.

Sound travels through the frame

A bicycle frame is a set of stiff tubes, and it transmits vibration well. A noise originating at the seatpost is regularly perceived as coming from the bottom bracket.

This is why the apparent location is the least reliable piece of information and the timing is the most reliable.

It is also why mechanics reproduce a noise rather than trusting a description of where it seems to be.

Recent work is the strongest clue available

Anything changed, removed, or reinstalled shortly before a noise started is the first candidate, regardless of whether the connection seems plausible.

A new noise after a wheel change, a bag being fitted, or a bike being transported on a rack points somewhere specific.

Riders who mention this unprompted routinely save a mechanic a long process of elimination.

What to write down before the visit

Useful notes cover when the noise started, whether it happens seated or standing, under power or coasting, in specific gears, and in wet or dry conditions.

Whether it is getting worse over time separates a wear problem from something that was assembled wrong once.

A noise that cannot be reproduced in the workshop is the hardest kind to fix, so anything that helps recreate it is worth more than a description of the sound itself.
