A Pre-Ride Check That Takes Under a Minute
A short routine catches the small number of failures that actually strand riders, and it works because it targets components whose failure gives no warning during the ride.

Most mechanical problems announce themselves gradually. A few do not, and a brief check before riding catches the ones that matter.
Tyre pressure is the check with the highest return
Tyres lose pressure continuously through the tube and the valve, and the rate is faster on narrow high-pressure tyres than on wide ones.
A soft tyre is more likely to puncture on impact, because the tube gets pinched between the rim and the obstacle. This is the single most preventable roadside failure.
Squeezing the tyre firmly is enough for a daily check. A gauge is worth using weekly, since the hand cannot detect a gradual loss.
Wheels held by quick releases need confirming
A quick release that has been knocked, or was never closed fully, may hold the wheel loosely enough to seem fine while stationary.
Lifting each end of the bike and giving the wheel a sideways push reveals movement immediately. It takes a couple of seconds per wheel.
Bikes that have been transported, stored in a rack or handled by anyone else are the ones where this matters. The failure mode is abrupt.
Brakes are checked by feel, not by sight
Pulling each lever before setting off establishes that the lever reaches a firm point well before the bar and that the wheel actually stops turning.
A lever that pulls further than usual indicates worn pads, a stretched cable or, on hydraulic systems, air in the line. Any of them is a reason to investigate before riding.
Rolling the bike forward a metre and applying each brake in turn confirms it under load. A brake that feels right stationary can still be badly out of adjustment.
A bounce test reveals loose fasteners
Lifting the bike a few centimetres and letting it drop makes anything loose announce itself. Racks, mudguards, bottle cages and accessory mounts all rattle distinctly.
The test also finds loose bearings, which produce a duller knock rather than a rattle. It does not identify the source and it does tell you to look.
This takes about a second and catches the class of problem that develops silently between rides.
The check works because it is short
A long inspection routine gets skipped, and a skipped routine catches nothing. The value here comes from it being fast enough to do without deciding to.
Anything the check flags is then investigated properly, with the bike stationary and time available. The check is a filter rather than a service.
