Getting a Wheel Back In Straight After a Roadside Fix
Refitting a wheel is where a roadside repair goes wrong, because a quick release or thru-axle that is closed carelessly leaves the wheel misaligned or insecure.

Most riders learn to remove a wheel long before they learn to put one back correctly. The refit is where the errors happen, and the errors are the consequential kind.
Two systems solve the same problem differently
A quick release is a skewer passing through a hollow axle, clamping the fork or frame ends against the axle by lever tension.
A thru-axle is a larger shaft threading into the frame or fork itself, so the axle becomes a structural member rather than a clamp.
Thru-axles locate the wheel positively, which is why they became standard alongside disc brakes where rotor alignment is unforgiving.
Seating comes before clamping
With a quick release, the axle must be fully seated in both dropouts before any tension is applied. Gravity does not do this reliably with the bike upside down.
Standing the bike on its wheels and pressing down while closing the lever lets the axle settle into the dropouts under the bike's own weight.
A wheel clamped while sitting in only one dropout looks close to right and will not stay that way under braking.
The lever is a cam, not a nut
Quick release tension is set by the adjusting nut opposite the lever, and the lever then closes over center to lock it. Spinning the lever like a wing nut does not generate the same clamping force.
Correctly adjusted, the lever meets resistance at about halfway through its travel and requires a firm push with the palm to close.
Closed levers should sit alongside the fork or stay where they cannot be knocked open or catch anything.
Disc brakes make alignment visible
The rotor has to re-enter the caliper between the pads, and a wheel not fully seated shows up immediately as rubbing or as a rotor sitting against one pad.
Spinning the wheel and looking through the caliper is the check, and a rub that appears only under pedaling load often indicates a wheel that is not properly located.
Pumping the brake lever after the wheel is refitted also reseats pads that were pushed apart during removal.
Torque and retention have specific requirements
Thru-axles are threaded fasteners with manufacturer torque specifications, and both undertightening and overtightening cause problems in the frame or fork threads.
Forks also carry secondary retention features, which exist because the consequence of a front wheel leaving a fork is severe.
Anyone unsure whether a wheel is correctly secured has good reason to have it checked before riding, since this is one of the few components where a mistake is not recoverable in motion.
